How has new ownership at Ste. Michelle Wine Estate (SMWE) impacted its prodigious talent pool?

Opening Doors

In 2021, private equity firm Sycamore Partners acquired SMWE from tobacco giant Altria for a reported $1.2 billion.

New ownership navigated a new direction, including expansion into Oregon, 40% cuts in Washington state grape contracts, and proposed redevelopment of Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville.

This refocus led some SMWE talent to explore opportunities outside the company.

“Ste. Michelle Wine Estates has been a leader in Washington for decades, so it’s no surprise that many of our state’s top winemakers and viticulturists have at some point worked for the company,” said Kristina Kelley, Executive Director of the Washington State Wine Commission. “Throughout the years, Ste. Michelle alumni have been terrific ambassadors for Washington, whether they start their own winery or vineyard, or move on to another growing region.”

Hit the Ground Running

Recent “ambassadors” include winemaker Juan Muñoz-Oca, chief operating officer of Marchesi Antinori USA, Ryan Pennington, chief operating officer at L’Ecole No 41, and Terry Doherty, chief operating officer at Goose Ridge Estate Vineyards and Winery. All hit the ground running with valuable skillsets honed at SMWE.

“Terry’s strong relationships, and deep knowledge of the industry have already begun to make an impact at Goose Ridge and Monson Ranch Distillers,” says Bill Monson, Goose Ridge Vineyards and Winery President and CEO.“From day one, among his largest priorities for our team have been to help expand and scale our portfolio of brands among both wine and spirits, as well as grow our share in the Washington wine market.” READ MORE HERE.
