Durant Vineyards hosted Oregon's first annual Sauvage wine event, celebrating Oregon Sauvignon blanc.

Dayton, Ore. – Over 200 attendees gathered under sunny skies at Durant Vineyards on May 20th for the first annual Sauvage Oregon Sauvignon Blanc Celebration.

The event showcased Oregon’s burgeoning reputation as a high-quality Sauvignon Blanc producer, first reported in the May 2022 issue of Wine Business Monthly.

Cusp of a New Varietal

“I think it’s the cusp of a new varietal for Oregon,” said event host Paul Durant of Durant Vineyards.  “You know, we’ve talked about it before – I’m personally fascinated with the wine, and the grape.”

Featured wineries included Division Winemaking Company, J. Christopher, Durant Vineyards, Iterum Wines, King Estate Winery, Laurel Ridge Winery, Matzinger-Davies, Patricia Green Cellars, and Sokol Blosser Winery. Each poured signature expressions of Sauvignon Blanc. Concurrently, Durant culinary directors, chefs Eric Bartle and Sara Kundelius, served small bite designed to pair specifically with Sauvignon blanc.

“I have never been to an event like this where there are other people making Sauvignon Blanc,” admitted Anna Matzinger, former winemaker at Archery Summit. She and Kiwi-born husband Michael Davies, executive winemaker at A to Z and Rex Hill, first made Sauvignon Blanc in 2006. “A lot of these folks are contemporaries and friends, all here together to focus on this varietal that I think is up and coming.”

“I think it’s really a great opportunity to showcase what Sauvignon Blanc can really become in Oregon,” added Matt Danner, assistant winemaker for King Estate Winery, the first producer to nationally distribute Oregon Sauvignon Blanc. “I think we make such exceptional wines in Oregon, I think Sauvignon Blanc has a place to show itself as very uniquely evolving.” READ MORE HERE.
